Language barrier is a significant issue
The health and wellbeing of any community depends on the ability of its members to communicate effectively with one another. In English In Action surveys conducted over the past decade, respondents report that the language barrier is among the most significant obstacles they face in the Roaring Fork Valley. Overwhelmingly, respondents report a need and a desire to learn more English. And, when adults improve their English language skills, it is not only they who benefit, but their children too. Studies show that the educational attainment of children is closely linked to that of their parents.
Help is Needed
Currently, English In Action has a waiting list of more than 100 adults seeking a volunteer tutor to help improve their English. While many wait for well more than a year for a tutor, they are eager to get started when a tutor is available. English In Action is working to steadily grow in order to serve more of the people on our waiting list each year. Since 2008, we have tripled the number of people we serve, but the need keeps growing. There is more work to be done. In 2020, our goal is to dramatically reduce the number of people on our waiting list, as well as the average wait time, which can be up to one year. But to do that, we need your help. Please consider volunteering as a tutor or donating to support our programs.
